Volunteer in the 1999 Cooperative Striped Bass Survey

The Cooperative Angler Striped Bass Survey was started in 1995 to obtain striped bass harvest data that is not otherwise available to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. The primary focus of this survey is to gather size data on harvested and released striped bass. Size data on harvested striped bass is analyzed to determine between migratory and premigratory striped bass harvest during the spring season. It is also used in determining the size structure of the harvest in both the spring and fall fisheries. This information gives the department a picture of the percent of legal and sublegal striped bass caught and released every year. In addition, the Cooperative Angler Striped Bass Survey data is used to augment existing monitoring programs and provide data on short term fishing trends.

As a new and expanded public service, MD DNR is now enabling survey participants to submit their data online at their convenience, 24 hours a day. Just go to the ONLINE SURVEY FORM and copy the information from the form(s) from your trip(s) and and submit it online.

The survey will run from the start of the spring fishery through the summer to the close of the fall striped bass fishery. In the summer off-season only report fishing trips in which you catch and release striped bass. To participate in the survey, simply print out a copy of the official form:

WordPerfect version or:
Adobe Acorbat version, download the Acrobat Reader here!

Right click on the link and select "save target" or "save link as" then choose a destination for the file on your local system. Take it with you each time you go fishing this season. One form needs to be filled out for each trip taken even if nothing is caught on that trip. Record the length for only the first twenty (20) striped bass you catch. It is very important to record the first twenty whether they are kept or released. Please check your location code on the map provided.

Record the length for the first twenty (20) striped bass you catch and release and the mail in the completed forms. If more than one survey participant is fishing on the same trip, only one designated individual should fill out the form for that day. Also, do not fill out the survey form for trips you take on a paid charter boat. Charter boat captains have separate reporting forms for their trips.

If you catch a fish with an abnormality, please return the fish to the water and report what you have found in the space provided on the survey form. Please note the type of abnormality as either a sore (penetration of the skin deep enough to reach flesh and muscle), lesion (breaches of the skin- irregular half dollar size splotches) or abrasion (reddening of the skin, no scales missing). Also, please note the location of the abnormality as head, body, tail or fins, or the whole fish.
